For much of the information contained herein I am indebted to various members of the family who have kindly responded to my inquires. Especially am I indebted to Roger Wells, grandson of Thomas and Viella Benjamin for much information and help with the earlier history. I am also most grateful to my mother Erma Benjamin and my grandmother Marian Pond Benjamin daughter of Eri Minard Pond and Minetta Grace Irish who has help me in gathering this material, and who has recalled many facts and incidents recorded.

The Benjamin family in America traces back to John and Richard Benjamin of England who came to America on a ship named the "Lyon".

Puritan migration to New England (1620–1640)

They sailed from London, England June 22, 1630 and arrived September 16, 1630 at Boston Massachusetts.
John and Abigail Benjamin who settled in Newtowne, Massachusetts in 1632. Newtowne is the original name of the present day Cambridge.
They brought with them their children John, Abigail, Samuel and Mary.

Eli worked as a Blacksmith. Children also listed.

In 1880 Census Eli R. Benjamin age 87 and Mary Ann Benjamin age 67 lived with their son Ira Benjamin age 29 and his wife Margaret Benjamin age 36 Birth Year 1844. Ira's Occupation Laborer, Father and Mother's Birthplace CT.

Charles Henry Benjamin b: April 1870, d : Aug. 16, 1870, buried : Springtown (New Paltz Dutch Reformed Church records), New Paltz Times Obituary of Aug. 25, 1870 : "In New Paltz, Aug. 16, Charles Benjamin, son of Timothy and Eliza Benjamin, age 4 months and 24 days. "The above family have been sorely afflicted, having lost four children in as many weeks." There was a measle epidemic in Ulster County in the summer of 1870. I imagine this was the cause of death for the four children that summer. What a tragedy!
